John Bazacas was from Newport Beach. John opened The Newport Beach Athletic Club in 1971 and was also a competitive handball player. He and his family were friends to the handball community opening up the club for many handball events.

Lake Forest College alumni Ivan Ruiz, Ricardo Palma, and Vic Perez organized a new league that consisted of 5 teams with 10 weeks of play.
